Why I Went Green

To be honest what I put on my face and body was never even a second thought to me until I asked a friend of mine why her face looked so great at 31 and why I was still dealing with adult acne at 25. She started to tell me about the lack of regulation in personal care products and how ingredients found in common products are known carcinogens, toxic to the reproductive, endocrine systems, and that they can also be linked to allergies, infertility, ADHD and many more... We’re talking everything from makeup, perfume, styling cream, toothpaste, to sunscreen, and really anything else that goes on your body. This is not just a problem for women.

Two pages of legislation regulate this $71 billion industry…and the last time a major federal law was passed to regulate personal care products (that’s men and women) was in 1938. WHAT?! For example, companies are not required to disclose the exact ingredients that make up “fragrance” which in truth could include hundreds of chemicals alone. Companies can also advertise however they please with marketing terms such as “natural” and “organic”, while being neither.

The EU bans over 1,300 chemicals in products, even Canada bans over 300. The U.S.? Only 30. 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Twenty years ago, 1 in 20 women were diagnosed with breast cancer, and currently…that number is 1 in 7 women! According to Breastcancer.org, about 90% of breast cancer occurs in women with no family history of the disease.

Our skin is our largest organ and what goes on it is immediately absorbed into our blood stream, with no digestive system to filter out the toxins.

As somebody who personally loves the way I feel from eating whole, clean foods, and being strong and fit, I began to ask myself: If I am putting so much effort into being healthy and well, how could I not pay attention to this very important aspect as well?

Trust me, I know this may sound overwhelming, but why not take control by having the choice of what goes in and on your body? I would love to help you switch to safer ingredients and go green, because it really can be simple! I’ll be sharing what I’ve learned and as I still learn, and I would love to help you do the same.
